Ingredients

  • 1 medium red cabbage (about 2 pounds), finely shredded
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 whole cloves or a pinch of ground cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instruction:

  1. In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion slices and sauté until translucent.
  2. Add the sliced apples to the pot and continue sautéing for another 3-4 minutes.
  3. Stir in the shredded red cabbage, ensuring it’s mixed well with the apples and onions.
  4. Pour in the red wine vinegar and water.
  5. Add brown sugar, cloves, and the bay leaf to the pot.
  6. Season with salt and pepper, then mix everything thoroughly.
  7. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the cabbage simmer for about 60-75 minutes, stirring occasionally. The cabbage should be tender and the flavors well combined.
  8. Once done, remove the bay leaf and cloves (if using whole ones). Adjust seasoning if necessary.
  9. Serve hot as a side dish, preferably with meat dishes like roasted pork or sausages.
